According to some early guidelines mentioned by the state of California regarding a multi-phase plan to gradually reopen businesses in the state, it sounds like the opening of attractions that would normally contain huge groups of guests at one time may not reopen until the laser phases of the plan. This could potentially delay the reopening of big parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood for several months.
While the subject of “theme parks” are never officially mentioned, this is the early thinking based on the first suggested guidelines. Of course, during the early days of social distancing, before stay-at-home orders, theme parks were going to be allowed to stay open at the time. So you never know, with the right proof of concept in place (like the successful reopening of parks elsewhere…) exceptions may be made and parks could open sooner.

According to this tweet, the Belgium government has now issued authorization for theme parks to reopen starting June 8th, 2020, as long as they use a list of proposed new operational guidelines. The list includes social distancing, reduced capacity attendance limits, closing indoor spaces and new cleaning standards. The June 8th date is contingent on if conditions are met within the country during prior phases of business reopenings set to take place over the month of May. These prior phases will see a return to the workplace and the reopening of certain classes of businesses at different times (May 4 and May 11), a gradual return to school operations, family visits and allowing new travelers into the country (May 18).
Some of the most popular parks in Belgium include: Bobbejaanland, most of the Plopsa parks, Walibi Belgium and Bellewaerde.

Germany’s Minister of Tourism, Guido Wolf, has laid out a step-by-step plan to revive tourism in the country in the era of Covid-19. He mentions that outdoor attractions will have a strong advantage over indoor attractions and suggests that Zoos, Amusement Parks and other open-air attractions could reopen as early as May 4 as part of the first phase. The second phase would see beer gardens, RV campgrounds and holiday resorts, hotels and museums be allowed to begin reopening. Follow the link to read more.

A set of aerial photos of the Disneyland Resort posted to MiceChat has discovered one very interesting thing. In the middle of the Avengers Campus construction site, you can now see that a massive Quinjet has arrived on site. This sets up the theme of the Phase 2 attraction to arrive later, as seen in early concept art featuring a Quinjet vehicle parked at an Avengers base building.
Look around elsewhere in the update and you can also see the massive clearing behind Toontown for the new Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction.

A local task force has given their first set of recommendations as to how Florida’s theme parks, hotels and restaurants should reopen. While this is just the first set of guidelines from the task force, it could see theme parks and attractions reopen as soon as June, with workers returning sometime in May to prepare the attractions, restock, and train for all the new safety procedures.
For Theme Parks and Attractions the guidelines are fairly common-sense.
Phase 1 - Parks to reopen at 50% capacity, Phase 2 will increase to 75% capacity.
Staff to randomly and regularly wipe down all surfaces.
Attraction Queues will have markers to keep guest groups six feet apart.
Senior members of the staff, age 65 and up, are encouraged to Stay Home during Phase 1 & 2.
Touchless hand sanitizer devices at every attraction entry and exit point.
Touchless hand sanitizer devices at every turnstile and point of entry into the park.
All staff are to wear face masks
All staff are to be given a temperature check upon arrival, if over 100.4 they will sent home
Restaurants:
Heavily encourage and promote online ordering and take-out options over eating on site
Disposable paper menus only
Touchless hand sanitizer devices at every entry and exit point.
Senior members of the staff, age 65 and up, are encouraged to Stay Home during Phase 1 & 2.
All surfaces and railings are to be wiped down and cleaned on a regular basis.
Hand sanitizer at every table.
All staff to wear face masks.
All staff are to be given a temperature check upon arrival, if over 100.4 they will sent home
All staff behind counters are to wear gloves, except bartenders
Bartenders must sanitize hands after each drink order
Tables are to be places six feet apart
Phase 1 - Reopen at 50% capacity, Phase 2 will increase to 75% capacity.
Hotels:
If possible use a Mobile Check In procedure
Housekeeping to have minimal contact with guests
Housekeeping only upon request and when guests are away
Use Self Parking (no valet only service)
Staff that can work from home should do so
Senior members of the staff, age 65 and up, are encouraged to Stay Home during Phase 1 & 2.
Room Service To be dropped off at guest’s door only
Touchless hand sanitizer devices at every entry and exit point.
Increased cleaning achieved through sanitation companies
All Staff to wear face masks
All staff are to be given a temperature check upon arrival, if over 100.4 they will sent home
Any staff member showing any flu-like symptoms will also be sent home
Front Desks will install “sneeze guards”
Mini-bars in rooms will not be stocked
Coffee Makers removed from rooms
Self-food services not offered
Pool area furniture to be spaced out for social distancing.
Frequent sanitize / cleaning of door handles, elevator buttons, railings, bell carts and door keys
Keep in mind this is just the first set of recommendations and nothing is set in stone yet, especially not an exact timeline to reopen, but it is good to see some progress and plans being made towards that endeavor.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Universal’s test of premiering the new Trolls World Tour film direct to audiences as a video-on-demand rental has paid off. According to the tweet, the Trolls sequel earned Universal more revenue in three weeks of digital release that the original Trolls movie saw in five months of theatrical release. Warner Bros seems set to follow in Universal’s footsteps by releasing their new animated Scooby Doo movie “Scoob!” on May 15th.
Meanwhile feeling threatened by the new trend, AMC Theaters has announced that they will not play any Universal films in their theater chain from now on, and went on to threaten any other studio (glare at Warner Bros.) who follows suit that they will do the same to them as well. Of course, as I’ve predicted myself, in a post COVID-19 quarantine world, I don’t see movie theaters doing too well for a while. In fact, I see people ready to upgrade their own home theater experiences to further enjoy their home viewing experience rather than return to theaters.
In fact, it is entirely possible that in the aftermath of COVID-19, we might see movie theaters begin to vanish.

- In 1996 Alton Towers opened a new themed area called Storybook Land. A huge part of this new family area would be a large animatronic bookworm, that would go on to entertain millions of guests at the park. After the area closed at the end of 2013, I managed to acquire this piece of Alton Towers history. But unfortunately the park had let the Bookworm fall into disrepair, meaning it would take a huge amount of work to restore. In this exciting series I'll be showing the long, but meaningful journey of restoring this classic piece of Alton Towers history.
In episode 1 I take a look back at the history of the Alton Towers Bookworm. Along with taking a look back at the construction of Storybook Land, I also discuss the many changes that were made to the area throughout the years. I later explain how I managed to acquire the Bookworm, and also talk about how big of a project this was going to be!
